Friday – 7:05am

“Lizz, wake up, we’re going to be late for school.” I groaned, whined and shook my still-asleep-sister hoping to wake her up. It was always like this everyday: the alarm clock wakes me up, I get off my bed and walk over to Lizz’s to do numerous attempts to wake her. She has always been a heavy sleeper and not even a slam of a door could snap her out of her slumber.

“Five more minutes, Lace.” She says sleepily and waves a lame hand at me to shoo me away.

I sighed and rolled my eyes. “Fine, five more minutes and if you’re still not awake by the time I come back, I am so dragging you off your bed.” No response. I sighed again and stepped out of our room and walked towards the kitchen to prepare mine and Lizz’s breakfast which consisted of cold cereal and bacon and eggs. I boiled hot water for our everyday morning tea. I kept on glancing at the wall clock to check if Lizz’s five minutes were up. It wasn’t. I kept on glancing every five seconds and just when the five minutes was almost up, Lizz came stretching and yawning inside the kitchen.

“Finally, you’re awake!” I grabbed Lizz’s apple green Deery Lou mug from the cupboard, placed a teabag inside and poured hot boiling water.

“Thanks,” she says groggily as I hand it to her and taking it from my hands. The two of us ate together in silence. Lizz wasn’t much of a morning person; her hyperactivity kicks in sometime around the afternoon or before noon.

You know what’s funny? I’m the youngest between the both of us but I always act like the older sister; not that I’m complaining or it’s a bad thing. I guess it’s because Lizz is adopted. Yes, she is adopted. My – or our – parents adopted her when she was only 5 years old. This is because of the reason that my/our mother had a miscarriage on her second pregnancy. I was supposed to have another sibling, but when that miscarriage happened, she didn’t want to take another risk of conceiving a child and possibly getting a miscarriage again, hence the adoption. When Lizz was first brought into the Hargrove household, I’ve always been told to look after her, get to know her and actually be her sister. We grew up together with me always watching out for her back so I guess that’s why I feel or act like the older sister.

After breakfast, the both of us got ready for another day at school. There was only one bathroom that could fit the both of us and our other crap, so we managed to get ready in time. There is another bathroom somewhere in the living room but it hardly gets used, just when there are visitors and such.

The John W. Institute of Art wasn’t so far away from our apartment. We’d sometimes walk to school if we had a lot of time to kill, take the bus or just drive ourselves to the school. The time was nearing 9am and our first class starts at 9:30. I guess we’re taking the bus now.

Friday – 12:10nn

Going to an art school doesn’t much have a difference in going to a regular school. We still have the cliques, the stereotypes and the drama.

The school funnily – not that I’m complaining – considers cheerleading a form of art. So yes, we have cheerleaders practicing at every corner possible in the entire school. They are easy to spot since half of their team is blonde. Some of them however don’t just scream cheerleader when you see them passing by in the hallway, but you’ll know for sure when you see them hanging around the three best cheerleaders in campus. Blonde and beautiful, they are: Nichole Saunders, Jac Vanek and head cheerleader, Keltie Colleen.

They’re not bitches, mind you; quite the contrary. They’re always so full of energy that it’s hard to see them in a dull state; always practicing, jumping around, waving pompoms in your faces and dancing everywhere. The title for bitches is reserved for two…well, bitches. Ugh, I’ll get to that part later. I get frustrated whenever I start describing them.

Anyway, its lunch time and I’m sitting alone on one of the many tables out in the Quad, waiting for Lizz and our other friends. I looked down at my lunch, chicken pesto on focaccia bread, and my stomach began to grumble. I looked around for any signs of Lizz: zilch. I couldn’t wait any longer and picked up the sandwich, ready to eat it, but someone suddenly sitting beside me made me divert my attention to the intruder.

“God, where have you been?” It was Lizz and she looked really pissed.

“The lunch line was so fucking long and you know how I get when I’m hungry and without food yet: pissed off and really bitchy.”

“But in the end, everything turns out bright and sunny for you once you feel fulfilled eating.”

“Damn straight!” She says in between mouthfuls of a Philly cheese steak sandwich.

Minutes went by and one by one, the rest of our lunch group – a.k.a. friends – arrived. Fleur Bordeaux, a pretty doll-faced blonde was the last to arrive, cursing in French.

“What happened now?” Hay Lin Lee, a Chinese girl with a fashion sense of a New Yorker, asks the French native beside her.

“Sonny Moore tried hitting on me again.” She growled; her thick French accent present in her speech. Ah, yes, Sonny Moore; the school’s weirdest student. He’s pretty small for guy and too bright – as in he wears bright colored shirts, sometimes in Hawaiian print – for a guy. Dude’s into techno which makes him weirder, and he has been chasing Fleur ever since he laird eyes on her. He’s so hyper which makes everyone suspicious if he’s on drugs or not.

“Are ya’ll going to Derek’s party later tonight?” Kylie Dawson, a Texan girl with red hair and freckles asked everyone. Before anyone could answer, Lizz kicked Kylie under the table. “Ow! What was that for!?”

Peyton Madden, a native of Australia who moved to Los Angeles for better education sighed and placed her hand over her forehead. “You easily forget a lot of things, Ky.” Kylie gave Peyton a confused looked. Peyton sighed again and did some head movements towards my direction. I think Kylie didn’t notice that I didn’t seem to react to the question; I was too focused on my food.

“Ooh, I get it.” Kylie slapped her forehead, “Sorry about that, Lace.”

“Ah, it’s no big.” I assure her and force a smile on my smile. I returned to eating my food but I saw Lizz giving me a concerned look. “What? It’s okay, you guys! I’m going to his party and so is everyone else!”

Everyone decided to drop it and just talk about the party in my presence. Derek Bloom and I had a fling last summer. I thought it would pursue into something further when school would come back around but nope, never happened. Instead, he found someone else. I’m not bitter, but eh…just saddened by the thought. Oh, whatever.

The Bloom Residence
675 St. Cloud Road
Los Angeles, California 90077

Friday – 7:45pm

The Blooms upholds their reputation for holding the best parties at their three-storey mansion complete with a swimming pool, a gym, an arcade and an entertainment room – basically, what those celebrities have on MTV Cribs, the Blooms have them as well. Even though everyone knows that Derek is one of the richest kids in school, if not the entire LA, he’s still a boy next door; hardly boasts about his fortune, that’s why he’s everyone’s friend.

During the times Derek and I spent together, the size of his house always amazed me and left me speechless and now that we’ve broken up, it still leaves the same effect on me. All six of us stepped inside the Bloom Manor and saw many familiar faces. Sonny Moore was at one side trying to score some chicks (but obviously to no avail), the three best cheerleaders in town were huddled together talking (possibly new routines) while holding martinis.

“Okay, whose turn is it to watch over Fleur?” Hay Lin asks. The reason to why she’s asking such question is that whenever Fleur gets the chance to drink a lot of alcoholic drinks, she tends to let loose and start dancing on top of the table. The last time that happened, she fell off the table (dancing too close to the edge and too drunk to notice) but good thing some people caught her before she passed out. Oh man, we all agreed to look after her when parties happen.

“I’ll do it. I can’t remember the last time I looked after her.” I volunteered. Nobody bothered to remember.

“You sure, Lace?”

I nodded. “I’m not really in the mood to party, so I’ll be fine.”

“Okay, but don’t hesitate to call one of us if you change your mind.” The four of them left to mingle with other people. I looked around for Fleur and saw her getting some punch (obviously spiked). I settled for a Screwdriver I concocted myself (Derek provided the ingredients) and the both of us ended up going outside to the pool area. We saw Lizz talking to her best guy friend, Matt Good who is also one of Derek’s really close friends.

“Look, there’s Derek! Let’s go say hi to him.” The punch was slowly taking over Fleur. She grabbed my wrist and pulled me to the direction of Derek. “Hey Der!” Fleur happily greeted with a huge smile on her face.

“Oh hey, you came!”

“Of course!” Fleur tried her best at an American accent and rolled her eyes in a ‘duh’ manner. “Who is crazy enough to miss a party organized by a Bloom?”

Derek laughed and then turned his attention to me. “Hey, Lace.”

I gave him a smile and a nod. There was an awkward silence between the three of us and I just continued to take small sips from my drink. “Whoops, I’ll just go and get some more punch!” Fleur cheerfully skipped back inside to get some more punch, leaving Derek and I standing face to face.

“So uh…Lace…how you’ve been?”

“I – uh…I have to go the bathroom.” I quickly walked back inside the house, heading towards the bathroom while praying that it was vacant and not occupied by people making out. I turned to a corner and suddenly collided with another person; my drink spilling all over my brand new Betsey Johnson top.

“Oh my God, I am so sorry!” The person ran to get tissues and handed a handful to me.

“Yeah, yeah, it’s okay.” I looked at the person whom I bumped into with and my eyes grew wide after realizing it was Sommer Ata, Derek’s official girlfriend. “Oh, it you Sommer.” Sommer also realized it was me. Yeah, Sommer and I know each other, she even knows Derek and I had a fling, but we’re cool.

“Lacey!” I turned around and saw Derek running towards our direction. “Listen, I wanted to talk to you about something and why do you smell like vodka and orange juice?”

“It was my fault.” Sommer said and turned to me, “I’ll totally wash it for you, Lace.”

“No, no. It’s okay, Sommer; really. You don’t have to.”

“You sure?” I nodded, “Well, if you’re sure. I’ll just be outside.” Sommer walked away and once again, it was me and Derek left alone.

“You’re lucky to have her, Der.” I tell him.

Derek smiled. “Yeah, Sommer’s a great girl. But listen, I have to talk to you about something.”

Derek took out a piece of paper from his jeans’ pocket and handed it to me. “I know how you and Lizz want to be pretty much part of the entertainment business. A friend of mine sent me that flyer and I know you guys needed it more than I do so…I hope you girls go and that I’ll be hearing your names pretty soon.” He gave me one last smile before turning away and going back to look for Sommer.

I unfolded the piece of paper and skimmed through it. An unnamed band was looking for people as dancers to join them in filming their new video and the first thirteen people who will show up will be granted camera attention and possible namedropping. I have to talk to Lizz about this.

Speaking of Lizz, here she comes along with Peyton, Hay Lin and Kylie. “Lace, where have you been!? We’ve been looking all over for you! Fleur is dancing on tables again!”

Oh shit.
