high life scenery - five: bringin' on the heartbreak. [part 2]
[x] Here's part two! :D

Better read PART 1 first if you still haven't!

San Francisco International Airport
S McDonnell Rd & S Link Rd
San Francisco, California 94128

August 11, 2007

We’ve just arrived at the San Francisco International Airport, got our luggage, gone through immigration and went out of the airport where we waited for their parents to come and pick us up. Lacey was still talking to Brendon, who was in Vegas, on her cell phone ever since we got off the plane. I don’t think those two will ever get sick of each other, they were also talking back in LAX before we got on the plane. Lizz was looking all around whoever seems recognizable.

“Where the hell are our parents!?”

“Stuck in traffic, maybe?”

Lizz shrugged and was about to call her parents when a black SUV pulled up in front of us. The window was lowered, revealing a boy just around Lizz’s age.

“You girls need a ride?” he asked with a smile on his face.

“Nate!” Both girls beside me screamed and ran towards the car.

Nate got out of the car anyway to help with whatever needs to be helped. So this Nate guy, I assume is their cousin, is a few inches shorter than me and had sandy blonde hair and brown eyes.

“Nate, this is Matt Good, one of my best guy friends,” Lizz introduces us, “Matt, this is our cousin, Nathaniel James, Heather’s brother.”

We shook hands, placed our luggage in the car and then drove off with Nate as the driver and me sitting beside him while the girls were at the backseat.

“So why didn’t mom and dad pick us up?” Lacey asked who was finally done with her phone conversation with Brendon.

“They were…busy so they sent me instead,” Nate had an all-knowing smile on his face that just left Lacey, Lizz and even I confused.

The Hargrove Residence
370 Castaneda Avenue
San Francisco, California 94116

Turns out they were busy preparing their house for a welcome back party for Lacey and Lizz. The moment Nate opened the door for them, everyone just screamed “WELCOME BACK!” Lacey and Lizz couldn’t believe that almost all of their family members were gathered in the living room, waiting and excited for their arrival. I guess it must have been a really long time since they last saw their daughters/granddaughters/cousins. As the two siblings were surrounded by relatives, I just stood by myself in a corner. That is, until Nate came up to me.

“Dude, c’mon, enjoy the party. There’s food going around.”

“Nah, I possibly can’t. I should just go and find myself a hotel.”

“Are you kidding me? No, wait, are you kidding Lizzie? She’s not going to let you stay in a hotel, you know.”

I sighed, knowing Nate was right. “But if I could convince her–”

“That’s not gonna work, man.”

I gave up. “I just feel…weird. I’m the only one who is not part of the Hargrove family.”

“Then mingle! C’mon, I’ll introduce you to the people here. I mean, Lizz would normally do this but I think she’s busy so I’ll just have to do it. Are you cool with that?”

“Yeah, whatever works.”

Nate took me around the house, introducing me to various family members. You have no idea how many times I was asked if I was Lacey’s boyfriend. Yes, Lacey’s, not Lizzie’s. But I was asked if I was Lizzie’s after anyway.

“Uh, no, I’m not Lacey’s boyfriend.”

“But I heard from Victoria that Lacey was seeing someone.”

“Um, yeah, it isn’t me. The guy is back in Vegas, actually.”

“Lizzie’s then?”

“Um, nope, not even. We’re just friends, that’s all.”

Talk about awkward.

So it turns out I’m not the only non-Hargrove in the event. Kathryn James, another one of their cousins, brought her fiancé. Tristan Hargrove brought his girlfriend, but Nate believes Tristan just bought her off.

“Kind of like the movie “The Wedding Date”. Have you seen that movie?”

“I think so…”

“She’s a whore, man.” His voice was filled with distaste for the girl.

“Dresses the part,” I tell him. Well, she did! Who in their right mind would wear a short red sequined dress to an event like this wherein everyone was dressed nicely and casually, unlike her, who was dressed as if she’s ready to dance on the tables of nightclubs. God, the world is fucked.

But come to think of it, everyone’s in like bright happy colors and here I am in almost an entirely black getup.

Oh well.

At least it’s not a red sequined dress that screams whore.

“I swear, that little bitch hit on me the last time everyone gathered for some sort of family reunion shit.”

Nate was about to tell me more about his bad experiences with girls, not that I mind, but thankfully, Lizz finally appeared.

“Hey, how are you doing? Sorry I left you. Everyone is just so caught up with us returning after a long time.”

“Yeah, it’s okay.” I assured her.

“So, has Nate been treating you well?” Lizz gave Nate a ‘you-better-have’ look.

“Yeah, he introduced me to your family. Well, most of them.”

“I saved you the trouble, little cuz.” Nate smiled at her and lightly punched her arm. “You owe me,”

Lizz snorted. “I don’t owe you anything.”

“Not even a girlfriend?” he wiggled his eyebrows, “You know, you might want to hook me up with your girls back in LA.”

“Nah, I don’t think so. You’re a good looking guy, Nate. I’m sure you’ll find someone soon,” Lizz smiled at him. “C’mon, Matt. Our parents want to meet you.”

She took my hand and dragged me through the crowd, past the kitchen and into the dining room, where it was quieter and where everyone was. “Mom, dad, this is Matt. He’s one of our guy friends back in LA.”

“So this is the guy you brought along?” a girl with auburn curls asked, while pointing a pen at me.

Lizz again introduced me to them. Heather was the girl with auburn curls and the woman behind the designs and fashion show Lacey and Lizz were going to take part in. So I was finally able to meet their parents, the famous restaurateurs in the San Francisco area.

“So we’ll have the guest room prepared for you, Matt.” Victoria Hargrove, Lacey and Lizz’s mom told me.

“Oh, no, that’s okay. I can just stay at a nearby hotel or something.” I tried to convince the parents, if not Lizz.

“Nonsense!” Damn. “You are always welcome to stay at our home.”

The Rochester Residence
610 El Camino Del Mar
San Francisco, California 94121

August 14, 2007

I cannot believe how amazing this house looks. Elegant wood was used in creating this Mediterranean inspired home and its location provided a stunning panoramic ocean view. This home belonged to the Rochesters, a good friend of Heather’s family and they were glad to share their home to hold a photo shoot for Heather’s clothing line named after her, of course.

The hired photographer, his entourage, makeup artists, hairstylists, wardrobe personnel and all other needed people were scattered in various rooms of the house, preparing the area and the models that will be used; two of those models being Lacey and Lizz. Everyone was so busy that I don’t think anyone had time to stop, talk and enjoy coffee.

I was the only one not doing anything – just hanging around, looking at every room and enjoying the antiques, paintings and whatever else is there – that is, until Nate came looking for me. Yeah, he came with us just because he didn’t have anything better to do, so I guess that makes the two of us then.

“Dude, this is so boring. Wanna go outside and smoke a joint?”

“Err, I don’t smoke,”

“Ah, right. Well, come with me anyway.”

So the two of us went to the backyard where this huge swimming pool was located along with small tables and chairs and a grill for outside dining. Since the house was like on top of a hill, we were pretty much elevated, overlooking the ocean. Nate leaned against the “balcony” and began to light a cigarette stick.

“So, talk to me, man; what’s up with you and Lizzie?”

I sighed. Here we go again. I had a lot of this “what’s going on with you and Lizz” talk back in LA with our friends, and now it’s happening again here in San Francisco with their cousin.

“Nothing, man. We’re just friends, that’s all.”

“Doesn’t look like it.”

“What makes it look like we’re not just friends?”

“Well,” he took a puff from his cigarette, “one, I pick up quickly and I am very observant. I’ve seen you look at her. I don’t mean the ‘normal’ kind of look, but there’s just really something. I know you look at Lizzie as a very special person and not just any other friend you have.”

“Of course, she’s my best friend!”

“I know, I know. But there’s something deeper, I can tell. Second, why would she pick you to come with her to this side of the state? And why would you agree? You don’t strike me as someone who enjoyed women’s fashion or whatever.”

I rolled my eyes and gave him a look. “Duh, we’re best friends. I support her in everything she does.”

He rolled his eyes in return. “But I’m sure she chose you for different reasons I don’t know.”

“And your point is?”

“I’m just saying that you guys are more than friends, but less than lovers. Cheesy, I know, but it’s true and you know it is.” He already finished one stick so fast and began to take out another one. Damn. “I know how you feel about her. Don’t even try denying it anymore.”

“I’m not,”

“Good. So why don’t you just tell her how you feel?”

“Because it’s not that easy!” I snapped. “How many times do I have to say this!? God!” I threw my arms up in frustration. “Yes, I like her. For God’s fucking sake, I’m in love with her but she never will.”

“She loves you as a best friend, doesn’t that count?”

“That’s just it! She’s only going to see me as her best friend. Nothing more, nothing less.”

“I think it’s only you who believes that she thinks of you that way. Well, maybe she is, maybe she isn’t, but how are you going to find out if you’re just going to stand there and do nothing? Drop her hints; let her know that what you feel for her is beyond your friendship. Oh, and please spare me from the ‘I’m afraid to ruin our friendship’ excuse. You’re not going to and you just really have to act now before someone else might go after her first.”

My thoughts drove me back to the earlier days when she and William Beckett had become friends, along with Gabe Saporta, Pete Wentz and basically everyone in the same freakin’ label. Lacey is already dating one of them. I began to think that maybe Nate was right. Maybe Derek, Travis and everyone else back in LA was right. I’m just standing by idly, staring at Lizzie and doing nothing.

The Galleria at the San Francisco Design Center
101 Henry Adams Street
San Francisco, Czlifornia

August 20, 2007

Rehearsals have been going on for a couple of days already and even though I can see that it’s almost near perfect, the fashion people still think it needs work. I can see the fatigue and frustration on each model’s face as they walked down the ramp, giving it their all. Heather wasn’t around to supervise since she had a previous engagement, so everyone was left behind with this psycho dude who was practically screaming at them.

“C’mon, people, work it!” This guy was completely decked out, complete with a desert scarf around his neck and a fedora hat. Doesn’t really look good, but what do I know about fashion? I’m just a normal boy who throws on a pair of jeans, a clean shirt and a pair of Vans, and sometimes a hoodie.

I’ve been accompanying Lizz (and I guess Lacey, as well) to their rehearsals almost everyday; unless Nate suddenly shows up and talks me into hanging out with him and his friends. They’re cool, I guess. We went to the mall yesterday, haha. I know, it sounds gay but there really wasn’t anything great we could do.

Another round of practice started. The heels that were provided for them screamed death and I feel so bad for them. One by one they walked down the ramp, with the next model following behind them. Lizz is the second to the last to walk, stop in front and pose a bit. When the last model came – a tall brunette with big brown eyes – and walked towards the end of the ramp, she lost her footing and came falling off the edge. I was sitting just near the front when she fell and on impulse, I was able to catch her before she could land flat on the floor.

“Alexis!” Rolf, scarf-fedora-wearing psycho dude I mentioned earlier, screamed.

He and his two assistants ran towards me to check if Alexis was alright as I was helping her stand up with those torturous heels.

“Alexis! My beautiful Alexis!” I saw some girls roll their eyes. I guess Alexis is Rolf’s favorite. He’d probably kill himself if something dangerous or worse were to happen to her. “Are you alright? Did you break anything? Oh, God forbid you break your ankle!” Rolf screeched, his hands flailing in the air.

“No, I’m fine. Nothing’s broken,” Alexis assured him, “Thanks to him,” she pointed at me.

Rolf looked at me with wide eyes, as if it was his first time seeing me. He turned to everyone else in the room, “Who is this!? Who is this man that graces our presence!? Why haven’t I been informed that this creature is here!?”

“He’s been here with us for the past couple of days already,” Lacey tells him from the ramp and the rest of them discreetly giggle.

“You!” Rolf apparently had something like a small whip or a stick with him and he pointed it at me, the thing touching my chin and lifts it up a bit. “Young man! What is your name!?”

Jesus fucking Christ, stop yelling at my face! “Matt. Matt Good. I’m a friend of Lizz–”

“Who!?” he cuts me off.

“– umm, Elizabeth and Lacey Hargrove; Miss Heather’s cousins,”

He lowered the whip-slash-stick down and looked at me in the eyes, “Well, Mr. Matthew Good, since you saved my precious jewel, you are welcome to stay in this room as long as you like.”

I laughed silently to myself; I just wanted to tell him that I’ve been hanging out in this room for how many days already. “Thank you, sir.” I just replied out of politeness.

“Excuse me! Wait! Matt!”

Rehearsals were over a few minutes ago and Nate picked us up. I was about to climb inside the passenger seat when I heard someone yelling my name. I turned around and saw Alexis running towards me. I grew confused to why she would be calling for me. But I guess I won’t be able to get an answer unless I talk to her.

“Yeah, Alexis?”

“Um, I just wanted to say thank you for what happened back there earlier. I wasn’t able to thank you right away after the incident so here I am.” She smiled. “And I was thinking of how I could repay you. If it weren’t for you, I would probably be in crutches right now. Those heels pretty much killed my feet.

“Oh, it’s nothing. You don’t have to repay me.”

“But I want to,”

I laughed. “No, its okay, Alexis. Don’t worry about it. I’m just glad you’re not hurt or anything.”

“Are you sure?” She bit her lip.

“Yep, I’m sure. Just do me a favor and don’t go falling off ramps again,” I joke and she giggled.

“I’ll try not to. Thanks again, Matt!”

“No, problem Alexis.” We waved goodbye and I finally get in the car, sitting beside Nate.

When I buckled my seatbelt, everyone’s eyes were on me. “What? Why are you giving me those looks?” Nate especially almost looked like he was glaring at me.

“Who was that?” Nate was the first to speak up.

“Alexis something. She’s a model. She’s gonna be in the fashion show along with your cousins.” There was a moment of silence when Nate I guess decided to drop the subject and drove off back to the Hargroves.

August 24, 2007

“We have 40 minutes people! 40 minutes!” Heather called out backstage.

Everyone backstage was hurrying up to get makeup and hair done. A number of photographers were going around taking pictures of the models being prepared for the runway show. My blonde hair was being backcombed when I suddenly saw Nate coming towards my direction.

“Lacey, I need to talk to you in private.”

“I’m kinda busy now, Nate, as you can see.”

He sighed. “Okay, you have to hear this: So we’re having cocktails outside and then the model from yesterday gave um…Aaron, two bars of chocolate just now.”

I wanted to laugh at Nate’s use of “codenames” if you can call it that. Well, Aaron is Matt’s second name anyway but he was referencing Alexis as “the model”. I looked at the mirror in front of me. Alexis was just somewhere in the corner of the room. “She couldn’t have, Nate. She’s here and has been since this afternoon.”

“Okay, I didn’t mean she gave it to him personally, but I guess she asked someone to give it to him. And guess what, the brand she gave him is like expensive shit. Rich dark chocolate wrapped in aluminum foil!”

“So where is the point you’re trying to make?”

“My point is, that model is trying to ‘seduce’ M – Aaron!” So Nate was basically ranting in front of me, trying so hard not to let his tongue slip and say Matt’s name out loud just in case somebody hears him who isn’t supposed to, like say, these stylists-slash-gossipers and Alexis herself.

“I don’t think Ma – I mean, Aaron – is going to fall for her that easily. It’s just two bars of chocolate. I think she’s just showing her gratitude after he saved her from falling from the edge of ramp a couple of days ago. For all we know she might already have a boyfriend. Don’t worry, Nate, Aaron still has eyes for our girl,” I assured him with a smile.

“I hope so,” he sighed and ran a hand though his hair, “Well, I should get back outside. He’s probably looking for me by now since I just told him I had to go to the bathroom and I really do. I just decided to pass by here first. See ya, Lace! Break a leg!”

When he disappeared, my phone suddenly began to ring and vibrate on the vanity table. Brendon was calling me which wasn’t much of a surprise.

“Hey!” I answered with glee in my voice.

“How’s my baby girl doing?”

“I’m fine, just getting ready for the show.”

“Take a picture of yourself right after. I want to see how pretty my girl is.”

I laughed. Man, I miss him so much. I never imagined we’d be like this. “Will do. So, how about you? Why’d you call?”

“Is it a crime to call someone and tell how much you miss and love them?” Brendon laughed, “That is one of the reasons why I called and it will forever be. Another reason why I called is because I have big amazing news for you.”

“What is it?”

“The band got invited to perform at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards here in Vegas and guess who’s taking YOU with him.”

I couldn’t scream out of excitement due to me being in a room filled with a large group of people, so I just squealed really high and loud. I couldn’t speak and Brendon was laughing out of amusement. “Pack your bags, baby, coz you’re going to Vegas!”

“Lizzie! Guess what!” I was slightly jumping up and down in front of my sister who was already lining up along with the other models.

“Um, Lace, the show is about to start; you have to go to your place now.”

“Oh, screw it, I know where I’m supposed to be and I’m so ready for this but before I go, there’s something I have to tell you!”

“Can’t it wait after the show? I’m really nervous for us and I don’t want this show to screw up.”

“Well, let me tell you now because if I wait after the show ends, I’M going to screw things up. I really can’t keep it anymore so please, please, please let me tell you!”

“Okay, okay, okay! Go ahead, but if it’s going to be long, forget it. So what is it that cannot wait?”

I gave her a huge grin, leaned towards her ear and whispered. “We’ve going to Vegas.”

Lizz pulled away fast and looked at me with wide eyes. “WHAT!? Are you kidding me!?”

“No!” I then kept my voice low, “Brendon called me and told me all about it. The award show is going to be on the 9th of September and he’s inviting me as his date.”

“What about me?”

“Oh, you’re coming too, of course! But you’re to get the same treatment as me. You’ll find out later.” I gave her an all-knowing smile and she just raised her eyebrow at me.

“What are you talking about?”

“Well, I better run,” I said, changing the subject, “I better get in line. Good luck, sis! Break a leg!”

“Wait! Lacey!” But I was already in line with the first few people. A man speaking was heard outside and then an applause.

“Ladies and gentlemen, may I present to you, Heather James’ new Spring/Summer collection!” Another loud applause erupted and the model in front of everyone in line came out behind the curtain and the rest of us followed until the end.

The show ended with a bang. Heather was praised, worshipped and congratulated of her work/design; everyone was just really proud and happy for her. I was hanging out backstage along with the rest of the people who participated; fixing our stuff and whatever else there is that needs to be done.

“Lizzie,” I looked up to see who was calling Lizzie. Turns out to be Matt who had his arms stretched out, pulling her into a hug. “You were great out there!”

So the two best friends were immersed into a conversation when Alexis suddenly pops out of no where, interrupting their talk. She’s getting pretty annoying whenever she shows up all of a sudden.

“I’m so sorry to interrupt your conversation, but I just have a quick question,” she turned to Matt, “were you able to receive the chocolate bars?”

Lizz looked at Matt with a raised eyebrow and a look that said ‘what chocolate bars?’.

“Oh yeah, yeah, I got it. But I had to leave it outside of the venue by the bar since it’s not allowed inside.”

“Oh, well, I hope you enjoy eating it as much as I enjoyed giving it to you as a way to say thanks.” She gave him one last smile and a wave to Lizz before walking away. She’s getting kind of annoying now whenever she shows up, but I hope it’s just because she’s possibly throwing herself at Matt’s feet ever since he became her “knight in shining armor”.

“What chocolate bars?” Lizz finally asked.

“It’s nothing. She’s just saying thank you after I saved her from falling off the edge the other day.”

Lizz nodded. “That’s pretty sweet of her. I’m jealous.”

Matt was taken back. “Jealous? You’re jealous?” I could sense the hint of excitement in Matt’s voice when Lizz said the J word. I think Matt was hoping right on the spot that Lizz could be realizing her feelings towards her best friend.

But we don’t always get what we want, unfortunately. “Of course not! I was kidding. Why should I be jealous of her? I got a chance to talk to her and all she could talk about is how amazing her boyfriend is, but by the way she was saying it, he sounds like a jackass. I don’t know how she could live with him, but then again, it’s her life so whatever.”

Matt’s face fell but he didn’t let Lizz see it. Damn, Matt’s really hopelessly in love with her. I don’t know if I can do anything. I know Matt wants to have Lizz all by his own sweat and effort; so, I guess that makes all of us – his friends – incapable to give big help.

Lizz’s phone suddenly rang. “Ryan?” she says out loud confusingly after reading the name that was flashing in front of her eyes, “Yeah, Ry?” she answered.

I could tell they were briefly talking about how the fashion show went and then Ryan decides to change the topic.

“Hey, so I guess Lacey has told you about the whole VMA’s at Vegas thing, right?”

“Yep, but she’s leaving one detail out and still hasn’t told me.” She looked at me and gave me a glare and all I did was to give her a smile.

Ryan chuckled. “Well, you’re about to find out.”

A moment of silence, and then…

“Ooh, I’d love to!” Lizz yelled out in excitement. More talking occurred and when the phone call ended, Matt was anxious to find out what just happened.

“So what was that all about?”

“Lacey and I got invited by Brendon and Ryan to attend the Video Music Awards and it’s gonna be in VEGAS, BABY! YEAH!”

And Matt’s world came crumbling down on him again. He sincerely showed, and at the same time, feigned happiness for Lizz. His Lizzie plus skinny hippie boy Ross partying it up in Vegas of all the goddamn places in the world.

Nothing could be possibly worse than this.
